ANTARCTICA 2008
DAY 1 DAY 2 DAY 3 DAY 4 DAY 5
The journey began from southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia to the coldest continent Antarctica. Took 2 days covering nearly 1000km. Left Beagle Canal and sailed across the Drake Passage known as one of the roughest and most dangerous seas in the world. The sea had calmed and our ship was cruising gently. We crossed the Antarctic Convergence Zone earlier in the day. Visited Melchoir Island, Danco Island, Wilhemina Bay, Foyn Harbour and Nansen Bay today. First continental landing today. Visited the Chilean Base Gonzalez Videla Station which was established back in 1951. Some of us wanted to see a different kind of penguin. Too many gentoos.

DAY 6 DAY 7 DAY 8 DAY 9 DAY 10
Visited the Argentinian and British stations. First glorious sunshine day in Antarctica. I stripped off at the bow! Not quite naked. The furthest we could go in this trip 65o 15'S 63o 18'W. Had BBQ lunch on deck today. Lots of whales and at least a dozen leopard seals on ice flows as we entered the Lemarie Channel. Antarctic Polar Plunge day. 22 people went for a swim. I wasn't one of them. I would love to but it was a very windy day. Our last landing was at Hannah Point, the most diverse landing so far; fossils, Macaroni penguins, Gentoo penguins, Chinstrap penguins, Elephant seals, Fur seals, Giant Petrels, Sheathbills, Kelp Gulls and Skuas sighted. The sea was killing me again. It was worse than the southbound trip. Had a bit of breakfast and then back in bed. Couldn't stay awake. The longer I'm awake, the more sea sick I get. Terrible first half of the day. Couldn't stand these 2 days of continuous roller coaster ride in the sea. The waves must have been pretty close to 10m high today. Glad the ship didn't turn over or split into half. The sea calmed later in the day as we crossed the Drake Passage and then back in Argentina.
